* Carbonated drinks – These are acidic too


* Alcohol- Alcohol relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter muscle


Other things that support to achieve heartburn relief:


* Eat more meals a day but smaller portions – This reduces the pressure in the stomach, preventing acid to ooze back


* Eat less calories – If you suffer from adiposity you should try to eat less calories as adiposity can be a factor in causing reflux.


* Quit smoking – Smoking decreases the production of saliva and it leads to increased production of acid


* Chew non-mint gum – Non-mint gum reduces the production of stomach acids


* Sleep on your left side – If you sleep on your right side the stomach acid in your esophagus takes longer to clear out


* Lift your head – If you lift your head with a pillow it's more unlikely that stomach acid flows into your gullet


* Avoid tight clothes – Tight clothes also increase the pressure on your stomach


* Try to live a more relaxed life – Though normally stress alone do not cause heartburn, respectively acid reflux, it can aggravate heartburn


* Drink peppermint tea or chamomile tea when heartburn occurs


It can be really helpful to keep track of what you eat. Write down the time and what you ate. When you notice any symptoms of heartburn write that down next to the meal after which the symptoms occurred.


If nothing of the above methods works you should consult a doctor because heartburn can also be caused by factors that have nothing to do with your habits.


You should take every sign of heartburn seriously because it can lead to severe damages like dental erosion or damage of the esophagus.
